Oh my is it a chocolate mayonnaise cake if so could you please share the recipe, I have not had one since I was a little girl in Japan. A friend of my dad’s used to make one, but the queen mother didn’t like her so no recipes were shared…

The creepiest part of it for me was that it WASN’T the mother that pulled the child off the train. The mother was the one insisting that she go. It was the FATHER that pulled her out of the train.

I read an interesting book last year about the war years in the UK when children were evacuated from cities and sent to live with families in areas that weren’t expected to be targets. The authorities had a lot of trouble getting parents to participate – at first everyone thought it was unnecessary, but even after bombing really began, there was a lot of resistance. It was hard for the parents and children to be separated, and the children hated being sent to live with strangers (and there were some cases where they were taken in so they could be made to do farm work, etc.) My friend who was growing up in Bristol (a port city felt to be a target) was sent to live with another family for a while, but her parents brought her back because they just couldn’t stand to be separated.

I think it’s easy to look back with 20:20 hindsight and say what people should have done, but I’m guessing the mother who pulled her daughter off the train thought things would get better or couldn’t get worse.
